How to run a construction zone, a taxi ride and a bus route the DOT way.

Handbook and quick actions

Construction

You need the Construction Certified role (Senior DOT Operator and above, see Perks) and one of the construction trucks: the 2014 Ford F-150 WDOT, or the 2024 from DOT Supervisor. Starting a construction privilege in any other vehicle is a strike.

Tools and signs

Traffic barrels
Use them in almost every construction scenario, especially on busy roads and highways, for lane closures or the middle/side of a road closure. Small cones work too.
Spotlight barrels
For busy or main roads and at night, so traffic can see your site. Also when you’ve run out of other tools.
Road Work Ahead
At every site, placed first before you set up. Right side of the road (left if the site is on the left), 5–10 car lengths from the site and from each other.
Road Closed
Only when the road is completely blocked, in front of the closed road. Not for one lane of a two-lane road.
Detour (left / right)
Required whenever you close a road entrance: traffic must know where to go. Use the matching side, 5–20 car lengths apart, never on a drivable part of the road.
Lane Closed
Only when closing a single lane on a multi-lane road: one inside the zone and one 2–8 car lengths before it.
Flares
Only at night (around the site, next to cones and barrels) or when a P/S unit is en route to you. Flares for no reason clutter the site and can be a strike.

Running the site

  1. Tell the session host so they can announce it. No answer? Try once more, then set up anyway, and let them know within 5–10 minutes.
  2. Signs first: Road Work Ahead, then your barrels or cones, then Lane Closed, Road Closed and Detour signs as needed.
  3. Always leave a way through. A detour must exist, e.g. closing the Fox Mountain intersection southbound with detours through Lakeville and the new neighborhood.
  4. Stay at least 15 minutes before cleaning up and moving, so members can adjust and the session doesn’t get chaotic.
Never block a road with no other way through, or close a road with zero warning (cones only, no Road Work Ahead, Road Closed or Detour signs). That’s harsh punishment. Not confident with a big site? Ask another certified member to help. Abusing construction can go as far as a full DOT suspension.

Taxi service

DOT Operators with the Taxi certification can drive a taxi, following the vehicle structure. When 10-8 as a taxi, the T in your callsign means Taxi: “Taxi 30, show me 10-8.” Don’t change your nickname to taxi.

Every ride

  1. Greet the customer and ask where they want to go.
  2. Ask if they’d like the radio on, and make sure they’ve buckled their seatbelt.
  3. Take the shortest route (the long one charges them more) and follow the speed limit.
  4. Being in a scene voice chat with the customer is encouraged.

Driving like a professional

  • No S-mode unless necessary. Keep your distance and your lane.
  • Brake gently in steps (55, 40, 25, 10, 0), turn slowly, no unnecessary horn.
  • Proper grammar with customers. Crashing or breaking road laws is moderated.

There’s no taxi uniform: wear dark, casual clothing. Taxi shifts are logged like any other shift: pick “Taxi” when you start it in the CAD.

Bus service

To drive a bus you need the Bus Certified role, at least Senior DOT Operator, and a relatively clean driving record. Pass the exam in #bus-cert, then open a Certification Ticket.

The routes, the stop map with photos of every stop, and the bus regulations are in #bus-regulations in the DOT Discord. By operating a bus you agree to follow every bus and DOT procedure.
